So you've got yourself a Motorola Xoom and now want to run some tablet-optimized apps on its large 10.1-inch display. Well what better place to start than with the CNN app which was originally used to demo Google’s Honeycomb earlier this month. The new app which rivals the likes of The Daily for the iPad, is already available for free via the Android Market.

Featuring a swipable navigation bar on the left and the stories on the right (somewhat like the Gizmodo layout), the app takes full advantage of the Android tablet's larger displays. The CNN app also provides live video broadcasts and prerecorded news. And unlike on the iPad version, the CNN Android app is available as a widget for your homescreen, only making you have to click the story and launch the app if you are interested in reading the full details. The widget also uses a new flipbook style to show you the latest information, something that is limited to Honeycomb devices like the Motorola Xoom only.
No word yet on whether the CNN Android app for tablets will remain free indefinitely or switch to a subscription model like the iPad in the future.
