Android Gingerbread Improves Battery Life In Nexus One, Droid Incredible & Galaxy S

The new Android Gingerbread 2.3 update recently hit the Web in the form of an emulator so developers could adjust their existing apps to make sure they were compatible with the update. At the same time, we managed to get a sneak peek of the redesigned UI.

Android Gingerbread improves battery life in AMOLED Androids: Nexus One, Samsung Galaxy S & HTC Droid Incredible

The updated UI seems to be designed to take advantage of AMOLED screens in providing better battery life by using more blacks. OLED technology is designed to show more vibrant colors and darker blacks while using less power. However this technology has the opposite effect when it comes to showing whites. It in fact using more power than LCD screens when trying to show white colors.

So it comes as no surprise that the new UI features a dark theme, mainly the notification bar has been changed from silver to black, the dial pad now features jet black buttons, the mail app goes from black to white and even the dock now is no longer gray and instead, yes you guessed it, a darker shade.

At the moment, there aren't many OLED displays on the market. The Google Nexus One features an OLED display and so does the HTC Droid Incredible. Other than these two we only have the Samsung Galaxy S line of phones packing a Super AMOLED display. These include the Samsung Epic 4G, Vibrant, Captivate, Fascinate and the all-new Nexus S. Well, its a start.
