Motorola Droid 2 Review: Lowered Expectations

Original Droid vs New Droid 2

{mainvote}

The original Motorola Droid would no doubt be the reason why the Android platform became a househould name. While numerous other Android smartphones came about shortly after, the Droid still held that title and remains the highest selling Android handset to date.

Motorola Droid 2 review: first look

  • To carry on this legacy, Motorola and Verizon have introduced the Droid 2. Here's our initial impressions of the new Droid:
  • The handset doesn't feel as "expensive" as the original and is slightly lighter with a more plastic look. We hear small creaks along the seams and overall it looks just like the original but with added chrome, blue color scheme and a rounder silhouette. If anything, it seems like a refurbished Motorola Droid.
  • The QWERTY sliding keypad is smaller than the original with pyramid like buttons (the center of each button is slightly raised). While it looks better than the original flat version, we don't think it's more efficient when it comes to typing.
  • The display is identical to the original DROID, once again nothing new here.
  • Once booted up, we see Android 2.2 but with a MOTO BLUR disguise. If you've read our review of the Motorola Droid X, you know what we mean when we say it just doesn't feel like an Android.

Motorola Droid 2: bottom line

Overall, the Motorola Droid 2 looks to be sturdy albeit minor refresh of the original Motorola Droid, and leave us wanting something more. While the original DROID was perfect, it would have trouble keeping up with the current army of Androids like the HTC Evo 4G, Incredible and the upcoming HTC Desire HD. Motorola should have aimed a little higher this time around.
